Former England and Tottenham star becomes a free agent aged 31 after he is released from crisis League One club

FORMER Tottenham defender Steven Caulker is now a free agent after being released by Wigan.

The 31-year-old came through Tottenham’s academy before making 29 appearances for the North London club.

He left Spurs in 2013 after a flurry of loan spells and made the permanent move to Cardiff City where he spent one season before moving back to London with QPR.

Caulker spent time on loan at Liverpool later in his career and even played under Jurgen Klopp – albeit for three minutes as an emergency striker.

After spells in Scotland and Turkey he signed for Wigan on a free transfer in January of this year until the end of the season.

But the big centre-back’s contract has now expired and Wigan are letting him leave as a free agent, they announced in a club statement.

Caulker joins a list of six first-team players who will be leaving the DW Stadium this summer including captain Tendayi Darikwa.

The Latics will be playing in League One next season after finishing rock bottom of the Championship this campaign where they will start with a four point deduction for failing to pay their players on time.

Caulker will be searching for a new club despite his stacked CV including an international appearance for England.

The London born defender got one England cap back in 2012 against Sweden and even managed to bag himself a goal on his debut.
