Despite winning the game 2-1 on the night, the French side had to go to a shootout with Shakhtar as the tie finished 3-3 on aggregate.

However, Lesley Ugochukwu’s miss from the spot gave 18-year-old Kevin Kelsy the chance to win the game for the Ukrainian side which he took.

Following the deciding effort, the Rennes players collapsed to the ground and Spence made sure to divert the cameras away.

Spence joined the Ligue 1 side on loan in January from Tottenham as he looked for more game time.

However, he has only featured five times and has been criticised by French media.

After the 2-0 win over Clermont Foot on February 19, Stade Rennais Online gave Spence a 3/10 rating, as he was highlighters as the “negative point” from the game.

The publication noted: “The negative point of this victory is the defensive fragility of the Englishman, completely dropped to mark the whole game.

“Offensively more visible, his ball ascent bringing the 2-0.

“Technical and messing errors for the rest.”

Spence was signed by Tottenham last summer off the back of his impressive loan spell at Nottingham Forest as he helped the club gain promotion to the Premier League.

Manager Antonio Conte admitted after Spence’s arrival that he was not his pick.

He said: “Spence is an investment of the club.

“The club wanted to do it. I said ‘OK, this player is young but he showed he can become a good, important player for us’.

“The club decided to buy him.”
