Pep Guardiola’s side were quick to respond, claiming 92 per-cent of possession in the following five minutes, but they failed to level the score despite a series of penalty appeals.

One of which came as De Bruyne went to ground following the slightest bit of contact with Rico Henry.

The midfielder threw himself to the floor after brushing past the leg of the full-back, sparking outrage from fans with many suggesting that he was diving.

One person tweeted: “A Kevin de Bruyne diving arc is something I wasn’t expecting this season.”

Another added: “When did De Bruyne start doing this diving stuff? Never normally like this. But just lately 2 of them. Disappointing that a great player has resorted to it.”

A third said: “De Bruyne has developed the diving gene man. Embarrassing.”

While another joked: “Kevin De Bruyne is having a week isn’t he!” paired with a clip of someone jumping off a diving board and into a swimming pool.

Following a VAR check, the midfielder was not awarded a penalty despite a number of appeals from City stars.

Man City went on to equalise just before half time thanks to a fantastic strike from Phil Foden.

The young star fired the ball into the top corner following an excellent cross from De Bruyne.

But, Brentford went on to win the game following Toney’s 97th minute goal.
