Fred thrilled with Man Utd pals Scott McTominay and Casemiro as Brazil star opens up on fans’ Joy Division chant

FRED is very happy with the Joy Division song being sung in his honour.

Now he just needs to learn who they are.

The Brazilian midfielder began Wednesday evening with fans in uproar that he was even starting the match against Spurs given his awful performance in the goalless draw against Newcastle the previous Sunday.

But towards the final whistle, the Stretford End began singing “Fred, Fred will Tear You Apart”, a song previously reserved for Ryan Giggs to the tune of the Salford band’s famous Love Will Tear Us Apart.

“Who?”, Said Fred when told about the band.

“I don’t know them. I’m very happy with the song, with the supporters. I’m just very happy with the team and the supporters. The fans were fantastic, they made a difference.”

Of course members of Joy Division went on to form New Order and there is certainly a new order about how Manchester United played in their 2-0 win over Antonio Conte’s high-flying side.

It was one that included the midfield pairing of Fred with his Brazilian team-mate Casemiro and while they were together on Sunday this time it really clicked.

Indeed Fred believes the partnership was key to him producing probably his best performance for United as he buzzed around the midfield, scored the deflected opener and contributed to Bruno Fernandes getting the second.

He said: “I’m very happy playing next to Casemiro. He’s a big player for the Brazilian team, we’ve already played a long time together in that team. It’s very important being side by side with him and playing with him improves my football.

“A big player like Casemiro can play there and Scott McTominay is also a big player. They are both very important.

“I can’t say anything about Casemiro, everybody knows his qualities and how important he is for the team, and Scott is also a great player.

“We have big games at this club all of the time; it’s a midfield where we have big players. We have to be good to help the team all the time and this is the most important thing.”

It was a performance celebrated by players and fans alike. On top of the home wins over league leaders Arsenal and Liverpool at Old Trafford it has helped to spread a real air of optimism around the club.

Fred said: “A big game, very important for me, a collective game which was very important for our team.

“We did a good pressing and we built a result with all the hard work that we’ve done. It’s a collective result and a very important one.

“A very good performance, our team worked hard for this during the season. We are adapting with the new coach,

“At home, we are a big team, we have had some excellent results, but we had our work to do and I think we did it well right from the start.

“In the last game, we couldn’t score, against Newcastle. We tried a lot, we lost some opportunities, we didn’t score.

“It was similar in the Europa League when we created opportunities and we scored in the end with Scott McTominay.

“I felt like we were close to getting a great result.

“We’ve been working hard for this all season and it happened. This win was very important to the team.”

Now Fred is determined that the performance is replicated on Saturday when they travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea in the 5.30pm kick off.

He said: “We need to carry on. On Saturday we have a very difficult game against Chelsea and now we have to rest to do a big game again.”
