Canelo Alvarez to have hand surgery after Gennady Golovkin trilogy with injury so bad boxing champ can’t hold a glass

CANELO ALVAREZ revealed plans to have hand surgery after beating Gennady Golovkin with his injury so bad he cannot even hold a glass.

The Mexican scored the most convincing win in his trilogy series with GGG, beating the Kazakh by unanimous decision in Las Vegas.

It followed after a contentious draw in 2017 and razor-thin majority decision victory in the rematch a year later.

Canelo, 32, came into his trilogy bout with Golovkin, 40, having been beaten by Dmitry Bivol in May.

And having finished his business with GGG, the boxing superstar has one more revenge mission left to complete as he eyes a rematch with Bivol.

But Canelo has to first deal with a hand problem by going under the knife.

He said: “‘I need surgery on my hand after this. On my left hand. But I’m good, I’m a warrior and that is why I’m here.

“[It bothered me] a lot. I can’t hold a glass. It is really bad. But I am a warrior.”

Canelo must wait for Bivol, 31, to defend his WBA light-heavyweight title against Gilberto Ramirez, also 31, on November 5.

But he confirmed a rematch with the Russian is his No1 priority.

Canelo said: “Of course, everybody knows. We’ll see, we’ll see what happens in that fight.”

The four-division champion jumped up in weight after winning the undisputed super-middleweight crown in November 2021.

But he appears ready to make the jump from 168lb to 175lb to avenge defeat against Bivol.

Canelo said: “It’s very important for my legacy, for me, for my pride, for my country, for my family, for everything.

“It’s very important and I will beat him.”
