But the Norwegian was uncharatersically quiet for much of the night and was stifled by Dortmund defenders Mats Hummels and Niklas Sule.

In fact, Haaland’s goal was his only shot on target and was created by a sublime cross from Joao Cancelo, who used the outside of his right foot to find the striker.

When the interviewer put it to Haaland that Dortmund knew how to stop him, he replied bluntly saying: “They didn’t stop me, I scored.”

The comment left his team-mate John Stones in stitches and put Dortmund star Nico Schlotterbeck in his place after the defender claimed he knew how to stop Haaland.

His team-mate Jude Bellingham, who opened the scoring at the Etihad, was less confident about containing Haaland.

When asked how Dortmund can deal with the City talisman, the England international replied: “I’m not really sure to be honest.

“He’s a player with a lot of quality and a lot of physical attributes that make him dangerous and like I said it’s not an individual task, it’s something that the team have to deal with collectively.
