Gary Neville labels Man Utd a ‘graveyard for footballers’ as legend names just TWO successful transfers since 2013

GARY NEVILLE labelled Manchester United a “graveyard for footballers” as he named just TWO successful transfers in the last ten years.

The former right-back laid into the club alongside Jamie Carragher on Monday Night Football – 48 hours after the humiliation at Brentford.

Neville and colleague Jamie Carragher broke down the embarrassing performance and the deep-rooted problems at Old Trafford.

And that included Neville breaking down the club’s major signings since 2013 – excluding third-choice goalkeepers and youngsters not ready for the first team.

Out of the 33 signings totalling £1.25billion in transfer fees, only Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Bruno Fernandes were given a positive ranking.

Seven got an ‘amber’ including Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire.

But the remaining 24 all got ‘reds’ to indicate they were unsuccessful transfers with the lengthy list featuring Paul Pogba, Alexis Sanchez, Jadon Sancho and £24million flop Morgan Schneiderlin.

Neville ripped into the culture of failure now embedded at the club, who have not come close to winning the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.

He said: “United have flip-flopped between managers and strategies.

“I was excited about a lot of those signings, even last year with Sancho, Raphael Varane and Ronaldo.

“It has become a graveyard for footballers this football club.

“Seventy-five per cent of those signings have not worked.

“Four or five per cent have worked – that is a horror story.

“We have blamed the players a lot over the last ten years.

“When a school is underperforming, they get put in special measures by the government and you don’t blame the kids.”

Questions marks remain over Ronaldo’s future at Old Trafford amid constant talks of a transfer away to play Champions League football.

Neville, though, fears for Erik ten Hag if he allows Ronaldo to leave and does not make some successful signings before deadline day.

He added: “They are damned if they do and damned if they don’t sell Ronaldo.

“A few weeks ago the best thing to do was facilitate a move away, now if they lose him there is no goalscoring left.

“If they don’t bring players in or players don’t perform and they sell Ronaldo, I think they can finish in the bottom half of the Premier League.

“They are absoutely demoralised and shot to pieces.

“Erik ten Hag in pre-season got them to a confident level but they have gone back to default.

“To not get the players he wanted is an absolute shocker.

“United will ride the wave and get through this season but will have to live through the rockiest times since getting relegated 40 years ago.”
