ENGLAND can win the World Cup because Gareth Southgate picks players on form – unlike some Three Lions bosses of the past.

That’s the verdict of former Three Lions winger Shaun Wright-Phillips as excitement builds ahead of the tournament in Qatar.

Both Wright-Phillips and his dad, Ian Wright, experienced England frustration but Southgate showed again in the last international break how he is prepared to give swift reward for good performances at club level.

Wright-Phillips said: “The strength in depth and healthy competition that England are going to take to Qatar is down to Southgate giving in-form players chances.

“I remember coming through and it took me, possibly,  a year and a half of playing consistently well, to get anywhere near the England team. Until I moved clubs.

“I wouldn’t necessarily say that people were only getting picked on reputation. But if you go back to my dad’s era, he won the Golden Boot and didn’t make it on the plane.

Wright-Phillips, speaking exclusively at a William Hill shop, said: “The way Jude played the other day, he’s basically said: ‘I want this shirt.’ 

“He went in there like a man who wanted to claim that position, to make it his own.

“That’s a fantastic place to be in for Gareth. Everybody has to bring their A game.

“That is the way it is meant to be for the national team.

“You’ve got to play who is on form and who is the best at the moment.

Wright-Phillips reckons England can go all the way in Qatar – if they learn the lessons of losing to Italy in the Euro 2020 Final despite having taken an early lead.

He said: “It felt like after they got the goal they didn’t keep doing what they had been doing. “They didn’t step away from it, but it seemed we went on to the back foot. We started on the front foot and it could have been two or three-nil. 

“If we play on the front foot and take our chances, it will be hard for anyone to beat us. 

“We have the players who can withstand pressure, we saw that against Italy – that’s why it went to penalties.

“Now if we get to a final, we will be in a completely different position. When we did it at the Euros, it was the first time that any of them, including the staff, had been to a final of that magnitude. 

“Now we know we can get there, the next step is to get there again and show what you believe in. 

“They have everything it takes.”
