Man Utd take extra measures to protect endangered bats at training ground with special shields to be installed

MANCHESTER UNITED are putting special “hoods” on their training ground floodlights to protect endangered bats that live there, The Sun can reveal.

The Red Devils called in experts to commission a special report into the needs of the nocturnal mammals at Carrington.

They wanted to install extra lighting on columns surrounding their pitches but concerns were raised about how it would affect the resident bat population.

Special “shields” will now be erected around each floodlight so the players don’t impact upon their natural habitat.

Bats are protected by UK law and if the proposals had been viewed as damaging, they’d have been knocked back.

But planning chiefs at Trafford Council have now given United bosses the go-ahead to install 14 column mounted floodlights to training pitches as well as other improvements, including a stand with TV gantry, ball-stop fencing and toilet block.

“At least six species of bat forage and commute around/over the area.

The report bans floodlighting being switched on between 10pm and 9am.

The improvements at Carrington come just months after Manchester United spent a whopping £20million at Old Trafford.

The revamp included bigger dressing rooms, a freshly laid pitch and better post-match media facilities installed in the tunnel area.

Last summer bosses revealed they were planning to next turn their attention to Carrington and were keen to make the training ground a “state of the art” facility once again.
