Canelo’s three-fight plan with P4P star set for Gennady Golovkin trilogy and cruiserweight title after Dmitry Bivol bout

CANELO ALVAREZ is set for three fights in 2022 – which includes two title challenges and a bitter trilogy bout.

The Mexican superstar became undisputed super-middleweight king last year after four fights in just 11 months.

Canelo, 31, has since signed to face Dmitry Bivol, also 31, on May 7 in Las Vegas for the WBA light-heavyweight title.

He won the WBO version against Sergey Kovalev, 38, in 2019 but soon vacated the belt to move back down.

Canelo will now be handed the opportunity to become a two-time champ at light-heavyweight having penned a two-fight deal with DAZN.

The second part of the contract includes a return in September with old rival Gennady Golovkin the targeted opponent.

Canelo was fortunate to walk away with a draw in their initial 2017 fight but won the rematch by razor thin decision a year later.

A trilogy bout failed to materialise but promoter Eddie Hearn has lined the two up for a showdown later this year.

Golovkin, 39, has to first beat Ryota Murata, 36, in their middleweight unification on April 9 in Japan.

Hearn told iFL TV: “If those two win. They will meet each other in September.”

Canelo has predicted he will KO Golovkin and end their rivalry in style.

He said: “That’s what I feel. First things first, I need to win this fight. I win this fight, and then we can talk about it.

“But that’s what I feel with that fight.”

After Canelo beat Caleb Plant, 29, in November to complete supremacy at 168lb, he requested to fight for the WBC cruiserweight title.

His challenge was accepted by the WBC and Illunga Makabu, 34, who would weigh TWO STONE more.

The move up in division eventually fell through, but Canelo’s trainer and manager Eddy Reynoso eyes the historic fight in December.

He said: “It could be Makabu because he’s the WBC champion.

“Whatever happens in these first two fights, we’ll decide in December. We got a disciplined fighter, a strong fighter.

“Those are the only champions that can go up and down divisions.”
