Ex-Chelsea ace and Ukraine hero Andriy Shevchenko joins Trafalgar Square protests after Russia invasion

UKRAINE legend Andriy Shevchenko joined London-based protests over Russia’s invasion of his country on Sunday.

The 45-year-old former Chelsea ace posed for photographs with fellow gatherers in Trafalgar Square and then posted the images on his Instagram account.

Ukraine’s all-time 48-goal top scorer stood alongside men, women and children holding anti-war placards.

He then geotagged himself at the English capital’s famous landmark before sharing the images with his one million Insta followers.

The star posted the photographs online along with the message: “Stop the war in Ukraine!”

Sheva added ‘Слава Украiнi!, which translates into ‘glory to Ukraine!’, and added the hashtags #supportukraine, #standwithukraine and #saveukraine.

Thousands, including Ukrainians, Brits many Russians, gathered at the central London landmark to demonstrate.

Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square was lit up with the iconic yellow and blue of Ukraine’s national flag.

Shevchenko is regarded as one of the game’s greatest-ever strikers after record-breaking goal returns for Dynamo Kyiv, AC Milan and Ukraine.

He also led his nation the quarter-finals of the European Championship for the first time in their history as their manager at Euro2020.

His playing career featured a largely unsuccessful spell at Prem giants Chelsea between 2006 and 2009.

In 2012, Sheva announced that he was retiring from playing football to focus on his career in Ukrainian politics.

He was most recently the manager of Genoa but was sacked by the Serie A side last month after just 11 games in charge.
