‘It terrorised us’ – Joao Cancelo emotionally reveals all about horror robbery that left family fearing for their lives

JOAO CANCELO has broken his silence on the ‘horrific’ break in at his family home in Cheshire over Christmas – and vowed it will make him stronger.

The 27-year-old was attacked by four masked intruders at his house a couple of days before New Year.

Cancelo was left with facial injuries and said his wife and two-year-old daughter were left traumatised by the incident.

But Portugal star has overcome adversity before – notably when his mother died in a car accident when he was 18 – and he steeled himself to play for Manchester City in a win at Arsenal on New Year’s Day.

Cancelo said: “That’s life, it happens. It was horriric, they terrorised my whole family.

“For me I know how to deal with it but my family didn’t deserve to go through that.

“I lost my mother but had to continue. There’s been lots of obstacles but I had to get over them.

“I’ve become stronger mentally and that’s how I want to keep going.”

Former Benfica star Cancelo will back in his homeland to face Sporting Lisbon in the last 16 of the Champions League tomorrow.

And he is looking forward to it after signing a new five-year deal at City this month – despite a rocky start after his arrival as a £60million signing in 2019.

He said: “I’d come from Juventus where there was a different way of playing. I wanted to enjoy football but it was my responsibility, my fault.

“I had to adapt to team’s style of play. I had to recover my desire to win in life and football.”
