Phil Foden unfollows pal Mason Greenwood on Instagram as footie stars ditch Man United striker after rape arrest

MASON Greenwood’s close pal Phil Foden has become the latest footie star to unfollow him on Instagram following his arrest.

The Man Utd striker, 20, spent three nights in a cell after being quizzed on suspicion of rape, sexual assault, threats to kill and GBH.

Within 24 hours of his arrest on Sunday, nine members of the team unfollowed him on Instagram.

Now his former close pal and Manchester City player Phil Foden, 21, has followed suit. 

The pair have previously been described as “inseparable” and it’s believed Foden was Greenwood’s closest friend while away with the England squad. 

They both landed themselves in hot water following their antics with Icelandic models in September 2020. 

The duo were sent home in disgrace by England after breaking Covid protocols following the UEFA Nations League match in Reykjavik.

Their paths first crossed in academy football and were roommates in the Under 21 squad after “immediately clicking”.

Both issued public apologies, with Greenwood promising to learn from his “huge mistake”. 

Talking about their friendship, Greenwood previously said: “Phil was one of the youngest at the 2018 Euros. He’s been in my position and that really does help me.”

It’s believed Foden unfollowed him on Instagram last night – three days after Greenwood’s arrest. 

High profile players including David de Gea, Cristiano Ronaldo and Paul Pogba have also unfollowed Greenwood since his arrest. 

Greenwood, who earns £75,000-a-week, was released on bail yesterday after spending 72 hours in police custody. 

He was suspended by United after the allegations surfaced online.

A GMP spokesman said: “A 20-year-old man arrested on Sunday on suspicion of the rape and assault of a woman has been released on bail pending further investigation.”
