An own goal and a penalty end Brentford’s run in the League Cup.

Chelsea started with the kids but had to bring on the big guns to gurantee progress.

Thomas Tuchel beats Thomas Frank in the clash of West London Prem clubs.

  • Brentford 0-2 Chelsea

    90. Three additional minutes for the visiting Blues to enjoy bragging rights over their West London rivals.

Brentford have not really lost or gained anything from this, Prem survival is their priority.

Chelsea’s bench was bursting with tired talent that he has had to use to progress as the three debutants failed to flourish.

  • Can’t Forrs it

    88. Marcus Forss asks for a penalty after tangling with Chalobah and Kepa in the box.

But the appeal is waved away and their are no strong protests.

Late subs Kante and James link-up down the right, the cross comes in low and hard.

And the defender hacks away with his left foot and it skids up into the roof of his own net.

    Brentford 0-1 Chelsea.

  • Brentford 0-0 Chelsea

    79. A real lack of attacking quality tonight has led to a dull tie at this stage.

No Lukakau, Havertz or Werner (no jokes about Timo please), while Toney has been a late sub.

The Bees should have had the game won in the first half but blew delicious chances.

Chelsea’s youth-team experiment didn’t quite get the desired results as they were all hooked for the old guard.

  • Brentford 0-0 Chelsea

    76. Chelsea make their final switch by sending N’Golo Kante on for Ross Barkley.

The Blues then break down the left, switch it to the right, James and Kante exchange passes before the Bees briefly clear.

But Brentford will not give up as Mbeumo chases and hastles the visiting defence.

  • All change here

    65. Ivan Toney and Christian Norgaard are on for Brentford in place of Yoane Wissa and Vitaly Janelt.

Chelsea teenagers Xavier Simons and Harvey Vale have their pro debuts ended early as they are replaced by Reece James and Mason Mount.

Thomas Tuchel has thrown on another couple of big guns.

And Sergei Canos gets booked, the free kick us punched away and Barkley wins a corner with a deflected shot.

  • Brentford 0-0 Chelsea

    65. Chelsea are bombarding the Bees’ box but without much skill or guile.

The home underdogs are standing tall and firm but how long can this last?

Barkley commits a blatant foul and gets punished.

And that allows both sides to make their changes.

  • Tune in, Ton on, Cup out?

    63. Ivan Toney has warmed up and stripped off his extra layers.

The ruthless Brentford striker has recovered from covid and is ready to return to first team action.

Will Chelsea’s makeshift defence and back-up goalkeeper be able to cope with his pace and finishing?

  • Brentford 0-0 Chelsea

    61. Brentford are happily camped in the box absorbing pressure and then explode when Chelsea dither on the ball.

Corner to the Bees now and the crowd lives in hope once more

  • Brentford 0-0 Chelsea

    51. Chelsea have not won the League Cup since 2015 but will fancy their chances if they survive tonight.

Brentford blew three perfect chances in the first half and never looked live recovering from that confidence blow.

Tuchel has sent on a couple of big guns and it now looks like an uphill struggle for the home side.

  • Brentford 0-0 Chelsea

    46. The visitors now have XI on the pitch that should be more than capable of winning the second half.

Jorginho, Pulisic, Barkley, Azpilicueta, Chalobah and Alonso are all on the pitch.

The Bees enjoy the first attack of the half but Wissa blows it by ballooning the ball over the bar.
