Roy Keane’s incredible gesture at Irish children’s hospital as doctor hails Man United legend for ‘Christmas miracle’

THEY SAY to never meet your heroes.

But in the case of Roy Keane, that doesn’t seem to be farther from the truth.

On Friday evening, as the country and its populace tried to process a seemingly ubiquitous negativity at such a typically wonderous time of year, one pediatric doctor decided to added a hint of positivity.

Dr Niamh Ni Loinsigh, who works in pediatrics in Cork University Hospital, took to Twitter to share a heartfelt story about the legendary former Man Utd and Ireland captain.

Prefacing the tale with the caption, “People need to hear something nice. I give you my tale of Roy Keane and the Christmas Miracle”, Dr Ni Loinsigh went on to retell how one simple gesture from the Corkonian would change one patient’s life.

She said: “This is a Roy Keane appreciation post.

“Most of you know Roy Keane is a hero in Cork and the closest thing I ever witnessed to a Christmas miracle was facilitated, I think, by Roy Keane.

“This was 20 years ago and we were looking after a patient who was very, very unwell and it came to a point where we weren’t really sure if they were going to make it.

“Unannounced and without any fanfare, Roy Keane came to visit the Children’s ward and he gave that child the boost and the energy that they needed to keep going a little bit more, I think.

“On Chirstmas Eve, the professor of pediatrics rang me in tears and I feared the worst, but no, he said that this child was completely better and going home.

“So thanks, Roy.”

As if on cue, fellow Twitter users went on to tell their own stories of positive encounters with Keane.

‘sandy barry’ commented: “I was working in CUH childrens ward in the playroom 20years ago!!! The day Roy came to visit! He was lovely with the kids, must say we were all a bit star struck.”

Not all of these encounters were in a medical context.

‘Niamh’ said: “I absolutely love Roy. I met him at the airport when they came back from USA 94.

“Roy came out from the airport hotel, the only one, and signed autographs for every person.”

In a follow-up tweet, ‘Niamh’ continued: “He then went back in, got his jersey and gave it to a child in a wheelchair. A Garda asked him why he didn’t go back into the bar. He said he’d stay out until everyone was happy. And he did. An absolute unassuming gent.”
