Strong police presence expected for Man Utd vs Liverpool after May showdown was called off following fan trouble

A STRONG police presence is expected at Old Trafford on Sunday when Manchester United take on fierce rivals Liverpool.

The same fixture was postponed back in May when United fans protested against the owners following the failed Super League venture.

Hundreds of fans managed to break into the stadium to stage their protest.

And fans also managed to block the players from leaving the hotel, leading to the postponement.

Fans tried to disrupt the fixture again 11 days later by slashing Liverpool’s team buses tyres, but the game went ahead and the visitors won 4-2.

The Daily Mail are reporting there will be an increased police presence around the team hotels and coaches in particular, to avoid a repeat of last season’s events.

If protests take place on Sunday, it would come off the back of an underwhelming start to the season on the pitch.

The Red Devils haven’t won in their last three league outings.

And midfielder Paul Pogba admitted something needs to change at the club if they’re going to win titles.

The Frenchman told Sky Sports after last week’s defeat to Leicester: “If we want to win the title, these are the games we need to win, even if they are very hard.

“We know that the fans were going to push and put pressure on us and we need to be more mature, play with more experience and arrogance – in a good way – by taking the ball and playing our football.

“We need to find the key for this change because we deserved to lose. I don’t know if it is the mindset of the players.

“We need to change something. We need to find the mentality and tactics to win. We have to look as individuals and as a team to fix this.”
