Angry Premier League clubs demand emergency meeting after £300m Saudi takeover at Newcastle

PREMIER LEAGUE clubs are unhappy over Newcastle’s £300million Saudi Arabia-backed takeover.

And the Toon Army’s Prem rivals want an emergency meeting with league chiefs to discuss the issue next week.

The angry top-flight clubs will not be able to derail the takeover but will demand to know what changed for the big-money deal to be approved on Thursday.

The cash-rich Magpies want to ensure there is an English identity at the club – with ex-Liverpool transfer guru Frank McParland lined up for a role.

Former Newcastle and England winger Chris Waddle said the first signing “needs to set the place alight”.

Manager Steve Bruce is set for the sack and SunSport understands Brighton boss Graham Potter is in the frame having impressed the new owners on the south coast.

Antonio Conte was an early favourite but SunSport has been told the Italian has ruled himself out of a move to Tyneside.

Saudi’s Public Investment Fund – worth around £320billion – will own 80 per cent, with its Governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan now also Newcastle’s non-executive chairman.

In a letter to fans, he wrote: “Most importantly, you can expect ambition. Like you, we want to create a consistently successful team. We’re here to build long-term success for the club.”

Staveley and husband Mehrdad Ghodoussi got the keys to St James’ Park yesterday morning and arrived to jubilant fans before meeting club staff.

Legend Alan Shearer is set to accept an ambassadorial role having met Staveley on Wednesday night after the takeover was completed.

And fans will be delighted to hear that the Geordie heroes’ statue is expected to be put onto club land outside St James’ Park having been on the site of old public toilets outside the ground.

Shearer said: “We don’t expect to be winning the league in the next few years or winning the Champions League, we just expect a little bit of something to look forward to.”
