THE football world is in mourning as Tottenham and England legend Jimmy Greaves has passed away aged 81.

The World Cup winner, who was one of his country’s best goal scorers, had been battling dementia for a number of years.

Tottenham wrote in a statement: “We are extremely saddened to learn of the passing of the great Jimmy Greaves.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to Jimmy’s family and friends at this sad time. Rest in peace, Jimmy.”

What was Jimmy Greaves’ cause of death?

Jimmy Greaves’ cause of death has yet to be confirmed, but it’s known the Spurs icon suffered from dementia for a number of years.

Greaves also suffered a serious stroke in 2015, leaving him with impaired speech and in a wheelchair.

He was admitted to hospital earlier this year in Chelmsford, Essex, not far from where he lived.

The World Cup winner also required daily care to help battle his illnesses.

At the end of 2020, Greaves was awarded with an MBE by the Queen for his services to football.

Greaves is survived by his wife Irene, his four children and 10 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

How many times did Jimmy Greaves play for Tottenham, Chelsea and England?

Greaves’ football career was a special one, having played most of his club football for Tottenham.

The striker played 379 times for Spurs and scored a whopping 269 goals in that period.

Before that, Greaves started his career at Chelsea where he made 157 appearances and scored 125 goals.

Greaves won the World Cup in 1966 and notched an astonishing 44 goals in just 57 games for his country.
