Cristiano Ronaldo laughs off horror miss after spooning first shot for Man Utd in 4,490 days painfully wide

CRISTIANO RONALDO was forced to laugh off his first Manchester United shot in 4,490 days after his dreadful effort dribbled wide.

United fans created a raucous atmosphere at Old Trafford to see returning hero Ronaldo, 36, face Newcastle United

Ronaldo laughed off the miss – and was smiling later as he bagged two goals

The Portuguese forward’s eyes lit up when a loose ball dropped to him on the edge of the six-yard box in the 11th minute.

It wasn’t an easy chance for the icon as he fired from a tight angle – although he was still expected to hit the target.

But Ronaldo completely misjudged his effort and ended up spooning the ball into the advertising hoardings.

He didn’t seem too bothered by the early miss, though, laughing it off before producing the goods for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

Ronaldo was a threat throughout the first half and scored the opening goal just before the interval thanks to a lucky break.

Just moments before the whistle, Mason Greenwood unleashed a challenging left-footed strike at goal.

The ball took a slight deflection off a Newcastle defender to trick goalkeeper Freddie Woodman, who parried it towards Ronaldo for a tap-in.

It was the moment Man Utd fans across the world had been waiting for since his return to Old Trafford was confirmed on deadline day.

It only got better from there as Ronaldo scored a trademark strike to put United back in the lead after Javier Maquillo had equalised.

United broke quickly with Luke Shaw in possession, the left-back sliding Ronaldo in to take a touch and then finish through the legs of the goalkeeper with his left foot.

Hundreds of supporters were spotted at the famous ground before Saturday’s game wearing Ronaldo’s trademark No7 shirt.

Man Utd owner Avram Grant was also at Old Trafford for the first time in two years to witness his new investment in action.

And the controversial chief would’ve quickly forgotten about Ronaldo’s embarrassing miss after he re-opened his Red Devils account.

Bruno Fernandes and Jesse Lingard then scored late goals to secure a 4-1 win.
