Gary Neville urges Man Utd to sign Harry Kane and can’t understand why they aren’t going ‘extra step’ in transfer window

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Gary Neville has urged the club to rival City in the race to prise Harry Kane away from Tottenham.

The 28-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to join the Etihad this summer in a huge transfer.

Despite City being desperate to secure the England skipper’s services, boss Pep Guardiola has stated he wouldn’t be fussed if they didn’t manage to sign him.

And Neville believes the Red Devils should look to bring him to Old Trafford if they wish to challenge for Premier League title.

United haven’t won the top-flight championship since 2013, and Neville has stated that despite this summer’s arrivals of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane, the squad isn’t strong enough to win the league.

He told Sky Sports: “My gut feeling is [Sancho and Varane] won’t have the same impact on Manchester United as Alisson and [Virgil] van Dijk to get them up to that 90-95 points they will need to win the league.

“I think they will still be short. Chelsea, you see what they have done with Romelu Lukaku. You see that Van Dijk has come back for Liverpool.

“You can see that City have come in for Jack Grealish and Harry Kane. If they get Kane there is a massive problem for United.

“I am struggling to understand why Manchester United are not going that extra step in this transfer window.

“With regards to Manchester United, they have always gone after the best player in the Premier League, the best English or British player in the Premier League, historically.”

Neville continued: “Anthony Martial, Daniel James, Jesse Lingard, you are talking about potentially offloading a lot of wages there, potentially getting some transfer fees in.

“Why are they not going for Harry Kane this week? Because I believe that if Harry Kane entered Manchester United you could get up to 90 to 95 points.

“Without him, they are still going to have to replace Edinson Cavani and Martial next summer. Martial is not going to do it, Cavani has only got one year left.

“They are going to have to get a centre-forward at some point, why not get the man now to give them that impetus to get towards that 95 points? Because I don’t think they can just with Sancho and Varane.”

Spurs gaffer Nuno Espirito Santo remained coy on Kane’s future after the club’s 1-0 win against Wolves on Sunday, where the striker came off the bench.

Asked if Kane would feature in Thursday’s Europa Conference League play-off second leg against Pacos de Ferreira – with Spurs 1-0 down – Nuno said: “I can’t answer that.

“It’s too soon. Now we are going to recover and we assess the next morning, like always. He did well, he helped the team.

“He is still in the process of improving his fitness but he is one of the best in the world.”
