FORMER Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero is reportedly set to return to football with Granada.
Chelsea were linked with him but decided not to move for the Argentina keeper.
Romero is reportedly close to joining the Spanish club on a free transfer.
Chelsea were rumoured to be interested in bringing in the experienced keeper as a back-up option.
The prospect of staying in the Premier League would have appealed to the shot stopper.
But the Blues instead opted to sign former Fulham shot stopper Marcus Bettinelli on a two-year deal.
Romero joined United in 2015 but has been increasingly sidelined and his last appearance for the club was in August 2020 against FC Copenhagen in the Europa League.
His chances of regular football at United were blocked by David de Gea and the emergence of Dean Henderson.
The 34-year-old was poised to join Everton at the start of last season until United blocked the move at the last minute.

This left Romero and his wife Eliana fuming at United’s unwillingness to let him leave.
Former Sampdoria keeper Romero spent much of last season back in his homeland in Argentina.
His contract at Old Trafford expired in the summer and the keeper’s next move appears to be to Spain after previous club spells in France, Italy and Holland.
