Why does Canelo Alvarez always fight on Cinco De Mayo weekend?

CINCO DE MAYO weekend is the most lucrative and well-known holiday in the boxing calendar.

Some of the sport’s biggest stars, including Oscar De La Hoya, Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao have fought on the jubilant weekend.

And now Canelo Alvarez’s fight events grace the Mexican holiday with its presence most years.

Why does Canelo always fight on Cinco De Mayo?

You wouldn’t be a fool for believing that Cinco De Mayo was a massive celebration weekend in which Mexicans go out, drink tequila, party and watch boxing.

But you’d definitely be wrong.

Cinco De Mayo weekend is actually more popular in the United States.

In fact, Mexican Independence weekend, which is in September, is the more widely-celebrated holiday in Mexico.

Boxing has made Cinco De Mayo, however, a huge weekend of festivities in the U.S., as its known for usually holding the best, grandest fight of the year.

Mayweather’s fights with Pacquiao and De La Hoya took place on Cinco De Mayo weekend, as did Pacquiao’s clash with Ricky Hatton.

Mayweather also fought Alvarez back in 2013 on Cinco De Mayo.

And it was actually De La Hoya who really made the weekend popular, when he beat Yuri Boy Campos back in 2003.

Since then, the mantle has been passed from fighter to fighter, and now to Alvarez, who has fought on Cinco De Mayo every year over the past decade apart from 2018 and 2020, is the main torch-bearer.

This weekend, Alvarez will fight Saunders on the famous holiday at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas in front of 70,000 fans for the WBA, WBO, WBC and Ring Magazine super-middleweight world titles.
