SOL CAMPBELL is keen on the vacant England Under-21 role.

The deadline for applications to be Aidy Boothroyd’s successor is on Wednesday.

Ex-Arsenal star Campbell, 46, who previously bossed Macclesfield and Southend, is understood to have been among those to have applied.

Prospective candidates have been encouraged to throw their hat in the ring as the FA conducts a “formal open process” to appoint the new boss.

Former England winger Trevor Sinclair revealed on talkSPORT last month that he had applied for the role, while Joe Cole has also spoken of his interest.

Speaking last month, Chelsea icon Cole remarked: “I’ve said before I’m not ready for a role like the England U21s manager.

“But I’m a proud Englishman and playing for my country was the proudest moment of my career, so I would regard any kind of position like that as more of a calling than a job.

“I’ve got all my badges and I’ve began on the road and I do feel like that role needs a younger coach who can get the best out of the players.

“I did a year with the Chelsea academy and I learned so much.

“When I started, they had me give a presentation to all the players and coaches on three managers that I had worked with before.

“For a forty minute talk, I spent two weeks preparing everything.

“I’ve loved being involved in that side of things, loved the year I did and I feel I learned so much that will help me in the future.”

Highly-rated Justin Cochrane, the current boss of England’s Under-17s, is favourite to land the position.

While Nicky Butt, Jody Morris and Liam Rosenior have all been mentioned as possibilities.

Boothroyd announced last month that he would be leaving his role in the summer when his contract expires following a second-successive Euros exit at the group stage.
