JOSE MOURINHO claimed Spurs were “punished” by a “modern penalty” against Manchester City.

City were awarded a penalty after Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg fouled Ilkay Gundogan after 23 minutes.
VAR confirmed the referee’s decision before Rodri struck the ball past Hugo Lloris to give City the lead.
Mourinho described it as a modern penalty, meaning it has to be given if there is ANY contact at all.
After the game, he said: “I saw a team playing well, very comfortable on the pitch, very stable having the ball, even from pressure zones with good quality.
“Having the biggest chance of the game to open 1-0 then being punished by what I call a ‘modern penalty’. The penalties of the modernity in football.
“These are the penalties when you cannot deny that there was contact, but in modernity every contact is a penalty.
“I’m not saying it’s not a penalty, I’m calling it a penalty of modernity in football.”
The defeat leaves Mourinho’s side slumped at ninth in the Premier League table after 23 games.

But the Spurs chief praised his players after the final whistle for their determination.
He continued: “We could see a very tired team against a fresh team. We could see that clearly.
“But I saw a team where the players gave everything, some of them even scare me.”
Mourinho claimed his men were tired from their FA Cup clash against Everton on Wednesday.
Tottenham crashed out of the competition after losing 5-4 to the Toffees in extra-time.
