Wolves boost as Jonny signs new four-and-a-half years contract after returning from six-month injury lay-off

WOLVES wing-back Jonny has handed Nuno Espirito Santo his second boost of the week by signing a new four-and-a-half year deal.

The 26-year-old Spain international has been a huge miss after being sidelined for the past six months with a cruciate ligament injury.

He suffered against Olympiacos six months ago, which required surgery.

However Jonny made his long-awaited return for 45 minutes against Leicester City on Sunday.

And the defender played a huge part in earning his side a point with a heroic double-block to deny James Maddison a certain goal.

Wolves confirmed the news in a club statement which said: “For the past six months, Jonny has displayed the determination and commitment which defines Nuno Espirito Santo’s group and he’ll now remain at the club until 2025.

“His focus now is on building on Sunday and returning to full fitness for the remainder of the 2020/21 campaign.”

Nuno welcomed the move and promised to wrap his outstanding wing-back in cotton wool until he has returned to full match fitness.

Ahead of Wolves’ FA Cup and Premier League double-header with Southampton, he said: “The decision to play Jonny for 45 minutes against Leicester was made before the game.

“We decided to start him and we decided the exact minutes he had to play. He did really well.

“It was a decision – not based on his form during the Leicester game – but for the games we have coming up.

“He’s not had many sessions but he had enough for 45 minutes. After that we couldn’t risk it.

“But to have him back is great news for everyone.”

After initially signing on loan from Atletico Madrid in July 2018, Jonny made 87 appearances for Wolves.

He has helped the club to back-to-back seventh place finishes in the Premier League and long runs in the Emirates FA Cup and Europa League.

Wolves made the deal permanent when they paid the Spaniards £15million at the end of the 2019 January transfer window.
