Chelsea verdict: Fans concerned Timo Werner may prove a flop after limp display vs Tottenham

CHELSEA needed a penalty to beat Tottenham and ended up hanging on for all three points in the final minutes of the game.

This was all due to the fact that that they once again could not finish their chances and were poor in the final third.

It has not only been the story of the last two seasons for Chelsea, it has also been the story of Thomas Tuchel’s reign as Blues boss so far.

The football has looked very good, they have controlled possession and been very progressive and quick with it, they have even looked devastating in attack.

But they have just lacked that vital decision making, final ball and finesse inside the opposition box – and this has left for a couple of nervous moments in games when they really shouldn’t be having them.

They should have beaten Burnley 5-0 in the last match, and against Spurs it should have been at least 3-0.

The game should have been dead and buried before Jose Mourinho’s side could even think about getting back into it.

Unfortunately, patience will now start to wear thin with Timo Werner, the Germany striker who arrived from RB Leipzig this summer.

But he is not solely at fault as other players have been missing chances all season.

Werner was given a full 90 minutes against Tottenham tonight and once again he was poor. His confidence is shot, his first touch is off and he just can’t hold the ball up.

He missed a few chances again and this is just not acceptable when the Blues are creating so many opportunities.

At this level you need a top striker who you can rely on, and quite simply, Werner is not that guy as it stands.

Chelsea fans have been trying to be patient with their new striker, but there are murmurs of frustrations starting to creep in online.

We cannot forget that the Blues got all three points on the night in their attempt to climb back up the Premier League table.

But it took a penalty to win it as they failed to take their chances – and were almost punished by Spurs.
