Posting a poignant photo of himself smiling with his dad – who played for Norwich and Chester in the 1960s – Scottish football pundit Sutton paid a touching tribute.

He wrote on Twitter: “My dad Mike sadly passed away yesterday.

“He was a great sportsman, teacher, husband, dad and grandad. He was my hero and I will miss him so much.”

Sutton’s dad tragically suffered from dementia.

This is something the former Celtic star has campaigned strongly about south of the border, consistently using his platform as a pundit to urge the FA to do more about heading in football and protecting players after research found there to be a link between them.

The tweet has racked up over 16K likes on the social media site.

And thousands have been quick to pass on their condolences to the former Norwich, Blackburn and Chelsea forward.

Football Focus host Dan Walker replied: “Really sorry to hear about your dad Chris. I know you have been valiantly fighting his corner for a long time. May he rest in peace.”

Ex-Manchester City ace Micah Richards said: “Condolences. Sorry to hear that news!”

Former Rangers ace Charlie Adam, now at Dundee, said: “Sorry for your loss.”

Fellow BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand posted: ” Sorry to hear this Chris. Continue raising the awareness. Blessings to your family.”

Football presenter Simon Thomas added: “So very sorry to hear this Chris. Thoughts with you and the family. Take care.”

Former Manchester City star Micah Richards expressed his sadness

Chris Stark, of BBC Radio 1, wrote: “Thinking of you and your family Chris. That’s a lovely pic. Rest in peace Mike.”

Fans also paid their respects to Mike by passing on messages of support to Sutton and his family.

One said: “Sorry to read about your loss. Take care.”

Another said: “Such sad news Chris he was such a good teacher. Take peace from knowing he showed us the way in our formative years… lovely man.

“RIP Mr Sutton condolences to your family.”

Sports presenter Dan Walker also paid his own tribute

A third added: “Devastated for you, Chris. Dementia is a horrible thing for everyone involved, not just the loved one who suffers from it.

“No more suffering now and he will be immensely proud of you for everything you’ve done for him. A lifetime of memories you’ll have to cherish.”

Another said: “So tragic , your memories of what you’ve just said about him will never leave you.

“May he rest in eternal peace. And I’m sorry you’ve lost your dad.”

And a fifth commented: “Sorry for your loss. The campaigning you’ve spearheaded will help so many people.”
