Newcastle line up January loan transfer for Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori as England star falls down pecking order

NEWCASTLE could make a January loan move for Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori, according to reports.

The talented centre-back shone in the first-half of last season, even earning a first England cap with his assured performances.

Game time dried up post-lockdown, however, with the 22-year-old not appearing even once last season following the restart.

And Tomori’s opportunities have remained limited this term, following the summer arrival of Thiago Silva, as well as the failure to flog Antonio Rudiger.

According to the Northern Echo, Newcastle boss Steve Bruce could pounce on the situation to bolster his defence for the second half of the campaign.

The report claims that the Toon will be limited to loan signings only.

And the Blues have ‘indicated’ that Tomori will be on the move when the window opens, putting Newcastle on alert.

Bruce is also set to try and bring former loanee Jetro Willems back to the club, with the Dutchman having recovered from injury.

Tomori has played just 45 minutes of Premier League football this season, and none since September 20.

The 6ft 1in star has failed to even make the substitutes’ bench for their last five games.

He did start both League Cup games, however, and has been an unused replacement for all four Champions League matches this term.

Kurt Zouma and Silva have cemented themselves as Frank Lampard’s first-choice pair, with the Blues’ much-improved backline keeping five clean sheets in their last seven league games.

Rudiger and Andreas Christensen also find themselves waiting in the wings for opportunities, leaving Tomori likely needing a temporary move in order to play.
