And wife Uschi says Muller now ‘eats next to nothing’ and spends most days ‘lying in bed’.
Muller scored 68 goals in just 62 games for West Germany, leading them to World Cup glory in 1974.
Nicknamed ‘the bomber of the nation’, Muller also plundered 552 goals for Bayern Munich.
He won four Bundesliga titles, four German Cups and three European Cups with the Bavarian giants.
But speaking ahead of his 75th birthday on Tuesday, wife Uschi detailed Muller’s battle with dementia over the years.
She told BILD: “He eats next to nothing, can hardly swallow, lies in bed for almost 24 hours and has only a few waking moments.
“It is so nice when he opens his eyes for a moment. He can sometimes signal yes and no with the blink of an eye.
“He has always been a fighter, has always been brave, all his life. He is now too.

“Gerd sleeps towards its end. He has closed his eyes, is dozing, only rarely opens his mouth and is giving pureed food.
“He is calm and peaceful, and I don’t think he has to suffer either. He’s slowly sleeping over.”
The revelation comes after England’s 1966 World Cup winning hero Sir Bobby Charlton, 83, was diagnosed with dementia yesterday.
The shock news was revealed by the former Manchester United star’s wife Norma.
Sir Bobby’s brother Jack, who died aged 85 in July, had also suffered with the disease in his later life.
Just days ago Nobby Stiles, another member of England’s World Cup winning squad, died at the age of 78.
He too had suffered with dementia in his later years.
