Chelsea player ratings: James and Thiago Silva shine in rare clean sheet against Man Utd but Havertz and Werner quiet

FRANK LAMPARD will be delighted to get a rare clean sheet under his belt as Chelsea managed a 0-0 draw at Manchester United.

But it was a case of roles reversed as the Blues were solid at the back but offered nothing going forward at Old Trafford.

Reece James and Thiago Silva were the standout players in blue.

But unlike in recent weeks, the visitors barely threatened in attack with Timo Werner and Kai Havertz particularly quiet.

Simon Phillips assesses the performances of Lampard’s men…

Eduoard Mendy – 7

He had a shaky moment in the first half when he passed it across his own goal that was too close for comfort, but Mendy made a number of good saves after that including to deny Marcus Rashford.

Cesar Azpilicueta – 6

Appeared to win a penalty when he was fouled by Harry Maguire, but somehow the referee missed it and VAR seemingly didn’t check.

Apart from that it was a usual consistent performance from Mr. Reliable.

Thiago Silva – 9

Another great performance from one of the calmest centre-backs you will ever watch.

Silva was dictating and controlling a strong Chelsea defensive performance from the heart of the back line.

Kurt Zouma – 7

Zouma did his job well and defended confidently once again.

He never tries to do too much and was a big part of Chelsea’s strong defensive performance again tonight.

Reece James – 9

Steady in possession as usual and he did try to threaten down the right getting a couple of very dangerous crosses in.

He was certainly one of Chelsea’s better players this afternoon.

Jorginho – 8

The Italian international was unleashed and able to advance more due to the formation, and he seemed to love it in more advanced positions.

He looked full of energy and he was involved in most of Chelsea’s good play.

N’Golo Kante – 5

Kante was decent pushing forward with the ball at times, but gave it away a little too much in the first half and just doesn’t bring enough to that central midfield role overall.

Ben Chilwell – 7

He was very lively down the left-hand side for Chelsea and always looking to threaten the United defence.

Kai Havertz – 5

Always looks lost when playing out wide, Havertz struggled to get involved in the game and was pretty poor until he was taken off for Mount on 71 minutes.

Timo Werner – 5

He looked lively as always, but he was isolated and far too quiet once again.

Despite being lively, his contributions were very poor in another game to forget for him. He was subbed off for Abraham on 71 minutes.

Christian Pulisic – 6

Chelsea’s brightest attacking spark in the first half and managed a couple of weak shots on target, but as with all of their attackers tonight, he just didn’t really show up.
