Wayne Rooney ‘angry’ he has to self-isolate and miss Derby games after testing negative for coronavirus

WAYNE ROONEY has revealed he’s angry he has to self-isolate after testing negative for coronavirus – because he will now miss ‘vital games for Derby’.

The Manchester United legend, 34, was forced to take an emergency Covid test after he was visited at home by an infected pal.

Wayne Rooney took a coronavirus test after the man who delivered his new watch returned a positive result for Covid-19

Josh Bardsley, 21, presented Rooney with a luxury watch last Thursday, before he later tested positive for the virus.

England’s all-time record goal-scorer then played for Derby on Friday night.

Rooney tweeted: “Just received the news that my Covid-19 test has shown I do not have the virus.

“Delighted for myself and family but obviously angry and disappointed that I now have to self-isolate and miss vital games for @dcfcofficial.”

Despite testing negative, government guidelines state anyone who has been in contact with a person who has tested positive must self-isolate for 14 days.

Rooney will now miss games with Huddersfield, Nottingham Forest and Cardiff, with the latter set for October 28.

Prior to his negative result, Rooney fumed that his health, as well as his family’s and team-mates, had been jeopardised by someone acting against government guidelines.

Bardsley had delivered a luxury watch to Rooney – in line for the Derby boss’ job – at his mansion on Thursday.

However, he had already been contacted by Test and Trace and so should have been self-isolating.

He had also taken a test, which later came back positive.

Married dad-of-four Rooney was unaware and played in Derby’s 1-0 defeat at home to Watford the following evening.

In a statement, Rooney said he only discovered his friend had been traced after being alerted by The Sun on Sunday.

A spokesman said: “Wayne met Josh Bardsley briefly when he visited Wayne’s house on Thursday.

“Wayne was not told by Josh or anyone else before or during that visit that Josh had been told to take a coronavirus test.

“Had he known Josh had been contacted by Track and Trace or had tested positive he would have refused to have seen him.

“Wayne is angry and disappointed that he, his family and his club have been put in this position by someone acting secretly and in breach of government and NHS guidelines.

“He is now taking a coronavirus test as a result of his contact with Josh.”

The ex-Everton striker had posed with the luxury watch for a photo on Bardsley’s Avant Garde Global business Instagram account.

Bardsley wrote: “Level Up… What a pleasure! Manchester United’s all-time top goalscorer. England’s all-time leading top goal scorer.

“Thanks for the business & enjoy.”

Rooney replied: “Nice one lads.”
