Generous Newcastle fans raise £19k for city’s food bank after boycotting £14.95 Man Utd PPV clash

GENEROUS Newcastle fans boycotted their 4-1 defeat to Manchester United on pay-per-view to raise over £19,000 for the city’s food bank.

More than 1,000 supporters donated £11,000 on Saturday alone – with the figure skyrocketing to £19,000 over the weekend.

The Toon Army were furious at being asked to pay £14.95 to watch their clash with the Red Devils on Saturday night.

So the #CharityNotPPV campaign was set up, with fans encouraged to give to the NUFC food bank instead.

On Saturday morning they tweeted: “We WON’T be watching it on PPV instead donating to the Newcastle West End Foodbank.

“£15 feeds 3 local families for a week, #CharityNotPPV.”

The food bank have fed 26,000 people since lockdown and expects the 1,000 it normally feeds every week to rise as winter approaches and the furlough scheme ends.

And yesterday they said: “We can’t thank #GenerousGeordies enough for their ongoing support. Incredible.”

Other fan groups have reportedly become inspired by the actions of the Toon’s followers.

Some are thought to be urging supporters to give their PPV money to charity.

Meanwhile, a Change.org petition is reported to have gone live calling for pay-per-view games to be dropped.

And Manchester United icon Gary Neville revealed he refused to pay the £14.95 charge to watch his club consign Newcastle to their second defeat of the season.
