Kepa has been dropped by Blues boss Frank Lampard following a series of blunders.
Edouard Mendy has established himself as the new No1 following his move from Rennes.
But Spain boss Luis Enrique trusted Kepa to start ahead of David De Gea on Wednesday night.
And he proved his potential as he kept Portugal’s star-studded line-up at bay for 90 minutes.
Ronaldo and Co did only register one shot on target – but that still leaves Kepa with a 100 per cent record for the evening.
The Juventus star, 35, came close as he rattled the crossbar in the early stages of the second half.
After a cross was delivered into the box, he shifted the ball onto his left foot before he fired his effort at goal.
Kepa breathed a sigh of relief as he watched the shot rebound off of the woodwork.

In the 67th minute Portugal were denied by the bar for the second time.
Ronaldo delivered the ball into Renato Sanches, who smashed his first time effort against the underside of the bar.
Spain will be glad Jose Mourinho wasn’t lurking in Lisbon to measure the exact height of the goals.
Kepa made an impressive save late on to deny Joao Felix from scoring the winner.
The match ended 0-0, but both teams were able to show off their talent from the Premier League.
Leeds United had two players in Spain’s starting line-up – Rodrigo and Diego Llorente.
That is one more player than Real Madrid had on show and the same amount as Barcelona.

Tottenham star Sergio Reguilon started at the back for Spain alongside Manchester City star Eric Garcia.
And Arsenal star Dani Ceballos kicked off the game in the midfield.
Portugal had Wolves trio Ruben Neves, Patricio and Joao Moutinho in their starting line-up.
