And they have recorded nine new cases – one fewer than last week’s tally of ten.

Both figures are higher than those recorded in the first fortnight of the season, in which three and four personnel tested positive respectively.

An official statement read: “The Premier League can today confirm that between Monday 28 September and Sunday 4 October, 1,587 players and club staff were tested for COVID-19.

“Of these, there were nine new positive tests.

“Players or club staff who have tested positive will self-isolate for a period of 10 days.

“The Premier League is providing this aggregated information for the purposes of competition integrity and transparency.

“No specific details as to clubs or individuals will be provided by the League and results will be made public after each round of testing.”

West Ham confirmed that manager David Moyes was one of the ten that tested positive in the week before last.

And the Hammers were also hit by positive tests for Issa Diop and Josh Cullen, prior to their League Cup tie with Hull City.

The trio have now finished self-isolating.

But Moyes, 57, has avoided returning to work just yet, having still displayed symptoms.

Liverpool have also had players test positive, with Thiago Alcantara and Sadio Mane having been struck by the disease.
