Maguire was found guilty bribery, aggravated assault and resisting arrest while on holiday in Greece.

Southgate had initially picked Maguire in his squad to face Iceland and Denmark but axed him later that evening.

Maguire has appealed his conviction and has maintained his innocence.

And Southgate admitted he will consider bringing him back next month after allowing him the time to clear his head.

Asked if he had been in contact with Maguire and was plotting an October call-up, he said: “Yes and yes.

“We’ve been in touch right the way through the last two and a half weeks.

“It’s clearly been a really difficult period for him and I think the last few days have been very important for him to relax, get away from all the attention and get a rest.”

England face a triple header of matches in October starting with a friendly against before Nations League clashes against Belgium and Denmark.

SunSport exclusively revealed how Maguire rang Southgate asking to be recalled for the clash with Iceland on Saturday.

His appeal means he has been given the green light to play.

Southgate was also urged by members of his coaching staff to reinstate him but senior FA figures were equally adamant the star should be kept out of the squad.

United have also allowed him to return late for pre-season training, before their Premier League campaign begins against Crystal Palace on September 19.

Maguire, 27, is considered innocent after an appeal was granted against his convictions and 21-month suspended prison sentence. A retrial may not be held for up to two years.
