Braithwaite scores first Barcelona goal after his wife thought he was cheating during ‘sneaky’ calls to secure transfer

MARTIN BRAITHWAITE has hilariously revealed that his wife thought he was cheating while he was sneaking around securing his dream transfer to Barcelona.

The Danish striker joined the LaLiga champions in a shock £15million deal from Leganes as an emergency signing back in February.

The Catalan giants were given special permission to buy a forward outside of the transfer window following the serious injury sustained by Ousmane Dembele.

And Barca surprisingly swooped to land former Middeslborugh ace Braithwaite on a four-and-a-half-year contract.

Speaking to the Daily Mail about the weeks leading up to the transfer, he said: “I didn’t tell anyone.

“I felt that if my wife was not the first person I told it would be sort of a lack of respect because we share a life together.

“But I know my wife felt something was going on, because I was having to take a lot of phone calls, sneaking out of the house, and it was freezing outside.

“She was wondering … she was almost asking if I had a mistress or something.

“The day I was going to tell her, everything broke out in the media and I was thinking: “oh, s***”.

“I had to sit her down that night and say: “I have to tell you something”.

“She just said: “I know what you’re going to say.” Her phone had been as busy as mine. I was disappointed that I couldn’t get that shock reaction from her, but she was really happy.”

Braithwaite rewarded boss Quique Setien with a goal in the 4-0 win over Mallorca – his first full 90 minutes in La Liga since joining earlier this year.

It was only his fourth appearance and second start since swapping a relegation battle at Leganes for a title race alongside Lionel Messi.

And speaking after the match, he said: “I’ve been waiting for it for a long time, so it’s amazing to score my first goal.

“It was most important to start like we did [on Saturday], so we are happy and we have to continue like this.

“As an offensive player you want to score goals and I’ve been working a lot in this break, and I’ve been really looking forward to playing this game and hopefully getting a goal and I’m happy, I’m really happy.”
