CHEEKY Ipswich Town have been branded “insane” by the EFL after they suggested opening League One playoffs up to anyone who wanted to take part.
All 71 Football League clubs met on Tuesday to hammer out the finer details of how the season should be finished.
Ipswich are said to have suggested any team should be able to take part in the League One playoffs
Amongst many suggestions came one bonkers pitch from Ipswich – who suggested anyone could take part in the promotion playoffs.
The Athletic claim the Tractor Boys’ suggestion was deemed “insane” and swiftly rejected.
Ultimately, the League One season ended the same way as League Two – by being called off with a non-weighted points per game system used to determine final positions.
That ensured Coventry were promoted back to the Championship after just two seasons in the third tier.
Rotherham will join the Sky Blues in the second tier despite being just two points above Oxford United, Portsmouth and Fleetwood Town, who are all in the play-offs.
Thanks to the points per game system, Wycombe leapfrogged Peterborough and Sunderland into the final play-off spot due to having played fewer games while being level on points.
Wycombe technically finish third, albeit level on points with Rotherham but behind on goal difference.
They will play Fleetwood, who drop from fifth to sixth, while Oxford and Pompey face off in the other play-off battle – scheduled for THIS month.
How the League One table looks after clubs voted to end the season using a points per game system
At the other end of the table, it’s heartbreak for Tranmere Rovers, Southend United and Bolton Wanderers.
The trio drop into League Two after having seasons to forget.
Ipswich, meanwhile? They finished 11th – right in the middle of the pack, confirming yet another mediocre season for Paul Lambert’s team, who could be so much more.
