Newcastle and Wolves aiming to secure shock Gonzalo Higuain transfer after Argentine fell out of favour at Juventus

WOLVES and moneybags Newcastle are battling it out for Chelsea flop Gonzalo Higuain – who could leave Juventus after a bust-up.

The Argentina hitman is still believed to be in lockdown in his home country, which has angered the Serie A leaders.

Higuain was previously loaned to Chelsea last season where he bagged three goals in 13 Premier League games.

Wolves could bring in Higuain to replace Raul Jiminez, linked with an £80million transfer to Manchester United amongst others.

And Toon want a big-money signing after getting the OK to complete their Saudi Arabia takeover, which would give them the richest owners in the Premier League.

The 32-year-old ex-Real Madrid forward could see his £5million-a-year contract terminated by Juve, after he went AWOL after the coronavirus outbreak.

He has been in Buenos Aires for the last six weeks as he returned home to be with mother Nancy, who has cancer.

But he did not bother to tell Juve officials when he flew out to South America.

Higuain has already snubbed a switch to his old club River Plate in Argentina as he has set his heart on a move to a Prem club.

He told TyC Sports: “River are a club that gave me everything, from letting me develop to Real Madrid buying me, but right now I don’t know what’s going to happen. My head is in Turin.”

If Wolves and the Magpies don’t need to pay a transfer fee, his sizeable £5m-a-year wages would be more digestable.

A move to St James’ Park could also unite him with fellow Argentine Mauricio Pochettino.

The ex-Spurs boss is tipped to replace Steve Bruce once the takeover is completed.

Toon have also been linked with Barcelona attacker Philippe Countinho and Real Madrid striker Gareth Bale.
