SERIE A faces being AXED as entire squads will be sent to quarantine for two weeks if just one player tests positive for coronavirus.

Top-flight teams in Italy have been given the green light to return to training and plans are in place for the league to resume on June 13.

But the Italian government have warned the clubs that everything will stop if there is a positive coronavirus test.

Should one player or staff member contract Covid-19, the whole club will have to go into quarantine.

Sandra Zampa, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health, said: “If one gets sick, the quarantine is for everyone.

“Otherwise we would go back to suspending everything.

“Everything stops, no doubt if the quarantine is triggered, the championship also stops.”

Italian Sports Minister Vincenzo Spadafora said: “Someone asked why a supermarket does not close if the cashier is positive while if a player is, the whole team is sent to quarantine.

“Because in football it is not possible to keep a distance.”

A medical officer from the Italian FA has warned the season could be cancelled if a solution is not found.

He said: “If we don’t find a solution, Serie A will not resume.”

Italy has been one of the countries hardest hit by the virus – which left the sporting world at a standstill in March.

The country have suffered more than 30,900 deaths and had over 221,000 confirmed cases.

Germany’s Bundesliga is set to restart this weekend with Dortmund taking on Schalke and Bayern Munich facing Union Berlin.
