EFL ‘confident’ Championship will resume in LESS than a month as Leeds, West Brom and Fulham battle for promotion

THE EFL is reportedly “confident” that the Championship season could be restarted in less than a month.

While the Premier League, its 20 clubs and the government continue to hold talks over ‘Project Restart, they have still yet to thrash out a date when the top-flight campaign can resume.

And discussions over whether neutral venues should be used continues to hold up discussions, although police appear to have given the go-ahead for teams to play locally.

Now ESPN claim the coronavirus football shutdown could be over “as early as June 6”.

Talks between the EFL and its 71 clubs are continuing, with it widely-believed the League One and Two seasons will be finished to focus solely on promotion and play-offs.

But there is optimism that the second tier can still be completed on the pitch.

Today’s report claims “Championship clubs are now merely waiting to be advised of the safety protocols involving testing, training and the staging of fixtures before launching full-scale preparations to return to action” on the first weekend of June.

Each of the division’s 24 clubs still have nine games to play in the season.

That leaves 108 matches still to go, plus the play-offs, to complete it.

The season was suspended on March 13 amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Leeds United are currently leading the Championship and hold a seven-point advantage over them and third-placed Fulham.

West Brom are second in the table and are six ahead of their West London promotion rivals.
