Jose Mourinho has personally called Thomas Meunier to convince PSG defender to make free transfer switch to Tottenham

JOSE MOURINHO has personally phoned Thomas Meunier in an attempt to lure the Paris Saint-Germain full-back into a summer move to Tottenham, according to reports.

The Belgian is out of contract at the Parc des Princes in June, leading to speculation surrounding his future.

And Spurs appear to have jumped to the head of the queue, given Mourinho’s persistence.

According to L’Equipe, talks between the 57-year-old and Meunier have gone well, coming very close to selling the switch.

But the 28-year-old’s primary desire would be to stay in Paris, the city in which he has made a home since joining PSG from Club Brugge in 2016.

The Ligue 1 champions’ sporting director Leonardo, however, has not made any contact with Meunier over extending his deal – despite the fact he has made 27 appearances this term.

Dortmund, Inter Milan and Napoli are also interested in the marauding right-back.

Daniel Levy is believed to not be so keen on making the move, but Mourinho is convinced.

Meunier would again be replacing Serge Aurier as a club’s first-choice right-back, having done so in Paris.

The Ivorian moved to Spurs for £24million in 2017, having lost his regular starting berth at the Parc des Princes.

Erratic performances, however, saw him struggle to dislodge Kieran Trippier prior to the Englishman’s exit – with Spurs having largely struggled in the position since Kyle Walker’s departure.

And despite an improvement this term, Aurier could soon be axed, particularly having recently flouted coronavorus lockdown rules.

Kyle Walker-Peters has also struggled to make an impression upon Mourinho, having been sent out on loan to Southampton in January despite the lack of a replacement.

It could be set to be a busy summer in N17 despite the stipulations of the coronavirus pandemic.

Record-signing Tanguy Ndombele could be on the way out after just a year, with Barcelona willing to offer any of Arthur, Samuel Umtiti or Nelson Semedo in exchange for the French ace.

Spurs were without a win in six matches prior to the suspension of football, being knocked out of the FA Cup and Champions League while sitting eighth in the Premier League.
