The hospital has already tripled the capacity of their intensive care unit as coronavirus runs rampant across Europe.

There have been 29,474 reported cases of coronavirus in the UK, with 2,413 of those based in the North West of England.

At this stage, every penny helps and one generous Liverpool star has donated a huge sum to help combat the disease.

The spokesperson for Alder Hey tweeted: “We’re so grateful to the @LFC player who has made a donation to the @AlderHeyCharity Covid-19 appeal for £25,000!

“The player wishes to remain anonymous, but on behalf of all of our staff, patients and their families, thank you.”

HOSPITAL PLEA

Alder Hey had earlier put out a desperate plea for donations as they looked to ensure every patient is given the treatment they require.

A statement on their website reads: “Alder Hey has tripled its intensive care capacity to support more of the region’s most seriously ill children, as well as its ability to provide intensive care support for young adults when needed.

“The hospital’s incredible staff are going above and beyond to guarantee patients receive the care they need in these most difficult times.

“We urgently need your help to support the hospital in whatever way we can as it copes with the Covid-19 crisis. Thank you.”

The generous act of charity from the unnamed Reds star comes less than two weeks after a Scottish footballer – believed to be Liverpool’s Andrew Robertson – gave a “huge donation” to a Glasgow food bank.

Glasgow NE Foodbank, near Celtic Park, the ground of Robertson’s first professional club, has provided more than 53,000 meals for locals amid the coronavirus pandemic.

In a tweet, the foodbank said: “Thanks to the Scottish footballer who donated a large sum to the food banks, including us.

“Without the support of generous individuals we would struggle.”

It is believed that Champions League winner Robertson also helped out Glasgow SW Foodbank, Glasgow NW Foodbank, Glasgow SE Foodbank, Rutherglen & Cambuslang Foodbank and East Renfrewshire Foodbank.

Glasgow SW Foodbank, in Ibrox, tweeted: “It’s an amazing gift and we are so grateful.”
