Watch world’s most awkward pitch invasion as fans realise they have NOT been promoted after stadium announcer gaffe


RODA JC fans went through an emotional rollercoaster after thinking their team had achieved promotion to the Eredivisie.

Supporters believed their side had confirmed their spot in the Dutch top flight for the first time since 2004.

However, there was one problem – their closest rivals had not yet finished playing.

Roda had beaten Cambuur 2-0 which led fans to think they had sealed the second automatic promotion spot.

Third-placed Groningen were still playing and needed a goal to take the race to the final day of the season.

As Roda fans stormed the pitch to celebrate with the players there was the stunning announcement.

Groningen were 1-0 down and appeared to be set for defeat until Thom van Bergen netted in the 95th minute to salvage a draw.

As fans started to hear the news at the Parkstad Limburg Stadion, there was a sense of disappointment in the air.

But then there was even more drama as Telstar scored with the final kick of the game against Groningen, only for it to be ruled out.

At Roda the party was restarted as announcer Wim Frijns wrongly claimed that the goal had stood.

Players had started to come out of the dressing room cheering and jumping.

Frijns told Voetbal International: “Someone said to me, ‘Telstar has scored a goal’.

“People were crying next to me, players came out, everyone was celebrating. 

“So I thought, it must be so.

“Sometimes you also have to experience strange situations. I’ve been doing this for decades and I’m only human.

“Something can always go wrong. I had a fantastic evening, you know.

“We won and the devil is in the tail. I don’t see Roda losing at Groningen.”

Roda still have the opportunity to seal promotion in the final game of the season.

They will have to take on Groningen of all teams and a win or draw will see them return to the Eredivisie.

However, defeat would see Groningen take their spot due to their superior goal difference.
