That contract expires in December this year, with the FA keen for Southgate to extend again.

But the manager cast doubt on his future when talking on live TV after losing the Euros final.

Southgate unusually referred to England’s squad as “they” and refused to comment on his immediate future in the aftermath of defeat.

He said: “I think England are in a really good position in terms of the experiences they’ve got now. The age of the squad.

“Most of this squad are going to be around not only for the World Cup but the next Euros as well.

“There’s a lot to look forward to but this moment is not any consolation.”

Tuchel most recently managed Bayern Munich from March 2023 until the end of this season.

There has been no contact between the FA and Tuchel but SunSport understands the German remains keen on the job.

Graham Potter is the current bookies favourite to succeed Southgate should he depart.

Tuchel meanwhile is a 33/1 outsider.

The FA are also keen on talking to Newcastle manager Eddie Howe but the Magpies would be reluctant to lose their boss.

Mauricio Pochettino is another manager the FA have admired in the past and is now out of work having left Chelsea this summer by mutual consent.

Under-21s coach Lee Carsley may follow Southgate’s path in stepping up from the youth groups to the senior team.

More outlandish reports have linked Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola with the job while Frank Lampard has also been suggested as a Southgate successor.
