Eddie Howe’s men probably couldn’t have wished for a better opening game than newly-promoted Southampton.
The Toon fans will be optimistic for the new season. No European football is a blow for the club as a whole but might actually be a good thing in terms of this year’s ambitions with one less competition to have to balance.
Newcastle are ninth in the all-time Premier League average points gained on the opening day, helped by the fact Howe has won both of his opening days at the club.
That includes last year’s 5-1 win over Aston Villa at St James’ Park, which looked like being the catalyst for a top season.
It didn’t quite work that way but a similar score in expected when Saints – with the second worst all-time EPL opening day average points – visit on Saturday.
Saints came up through the playoffs last season having finished 10 points off winners Leicester City.
Draws with Lazio and Getafe rounded off their pre-season, with a win over Millwall prior to that making it just three goals scored in the last three games. They’ll be keen to keep things tight here too.

Al or nothing
There’s loads to be optimistic about this season for Newcastle fans. Keeping hold of Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak is massive for the club.
As far as the latter goes, his 21 goals were only beaten by Cole Palmer (22) and Erling Haaland (27) last year. Given he only made 30 Premier League appearances due to injury, that conversion is much greater than the other two. Fancied to get off to a flyer.

Goals
Scoring goals certainly isn’t Newcastle’s problem. They scored 4+ goals in four of the last seven games last season, as well as two at Old Trafford.
