Harry Kane would have a trophy by now if I’d had my way, says former manager Jose Mourinho

HARRY KANE’S trophy famine would have ended three years ago if Jose Mourinho had not been sacked as Spurs boss – so says the Special One himself.

The legendary boss was given his P45 by Daniel Levy six days before the League Cup final in 2021.

Tottenham ended up losing to Manchester City and Kane’s career-long search for silverware has continued ever since.

That is despite moving last summer to perennial winners Bayern Munich, who incredibly finished the season empty-handed during Kane’s maiden term in Germany.

Mourinho, appointed this week as the new Fenerbahce chief, said: “Kane has scored goals for Tottenham, England, and I had no doubts that he would score goals for Bayern.

“The only thing he is missing is to win a trophy. He was my player at Tottenham, and I was going to win one with him, but I was sacked six days before the final.”

Mourinho fancies England’s chances – but he also reckons his own nation, Portugal, are looking in great nick.

The 61-year-old added: “I don’t want to be disrespectful about previous generations that we had.

“I don’t want to say Portugal are the best team, but Spain, France, England, Germany are not better.

“If there is a surprise (winner), I will be surprised! France and Germany always do well, Portugal and England are better than ever.

“These four teams. I’m not certain about Spain but the football they play and the players they have are of the highest quality. Italy or Belgium would be a surprise.”
