Danny Welbeck injury update as Brighton manager left fearing for striker after he is stretchered off and given oxygen

BRIGHTON boss Fabian Hurzeler is praying golden oldie Danny Welbeck’s back injury is not as bad as feared.

The striker, who turns 34 next month, was carried off receiving oxygen for the pain after being caught by Fabian Schar’s knee during Brighton’s 1-0 win over Newcastle yesterday.

Welbeck only managed five goals in the entirety of last season – but this was his fifth already this term as he appears to be in the form of his life.

The Seagulls boss said: “Hopefully it’s not that bad but we can’t be sure. Let’s wait for the result of the scans.

“I don’t judge him just by goals and assists, honestly for me it’s more about how he works for the team.

“He’s the perfect role model and you can only do it every week when you behave professionally.”

Brighton captain Lewis Dunk added: “I’m gutted to see him go off, he’s been in top, top form this season. He was ruthless scoring his goal.

“He’s one of the top professionals at this football club and he’s a great key to our success.

“He helps everyone, young and old. Hopefully his injury is not too bad and we’ll have him fighting to get fit.”

And it looks as though Welbeck could be doing better than initially thought after Brighton’s official X account posted an update on his injury.
