Dortmund started the match well as they raced into a 2-0 lead inside 28 minutes thanks to a brace from Marcel Sabitzer.

Monchengladbach found a way back into the tie as Maximilian Wober bagged in the 36th minute.

Former Manchester United loanee Sabitzer then thought he had the chance to restore his side’s two-goal lead in the 51st minute.

Karim Adeyemi appeared to be brought down by Jonas Omlin as the referee pointed to the spot.

Sabitzer stepped up to take the penalty but as he was about to kick the ball the referee blew his whistle once again.

As the ball hit the net, the players were subject to a very late VAR check on the incident.

The decision arrived to overturn the penalty as Omlin was judged to have won the ball fairly.

Fans were left in shock as they reacted on social media.

Adeyemi was then sent off in the 55th minute for a second bookable offence.
