Messi was shown on the sidelines in tears after he shortly walked off the field.
This comes after Messi suffered an injury scare late in the first half after falling to the pitch and grabbing his ankle after diving for the ball.
Argentina has taken a 1-0 lead late in extra time after a Lautaro Martinez off a turnover.
