Returning Spurs star Rodon faces a crunch summer under Ange Postecoglou after disappointing loan

JOE RODON faces a crunch summer at Tottenham but Wales want a say in the next step of his career path.

The Spurs defender, 25, will return to Hotspur Way for pre-season under new boss Ange Postecoglou on the back of a poor season-long loan spell with Rennes in Ligue 1.

Rodon made 21 appearances for the French club – but only seven of those came after last November’s World Cup.

Rennes did not take up the option of signing the ex-Swansea centre-back in a £18million permanent deal.

And that has left his club future uncertain as ex-Celtic chief Postecoglou takes over in North London.

Rodon has been a mainstay for Wales and the 37-cap star performed well against Croatia and Latvia in March despite his club woes.

But the defender looked off the pace in an error-strewn display in this month’s 4-2 Euro 2024 qualifying humiliation at home to Armenia as a lack of regular football caught up with him.

Rodon produced a better display in the 2-0 loss in Turkey as Wales played with ten men for 59 minutes following Joe Morrell’s red card.

Now a decision needs to be made in the coming weeks on his club home for next season.

Wales boss Robert Page said: “He will want to play games because I know him as a character. He’ll want to play week in, week out.

“That’s up to the club now. I’d imagine he will do a pre-season there and then they will make a decision on what’s best for him next year.

“If we can have a little bit of input in that then great.”

Rodon joined Spurs in an initial £11million deal, rising to £15million, from Swansea in October 2020.
